Measurements were taken from the following instruments with kind permission from the museums:

Clarinets in Bb, A and C by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Grenser (1764-1813) in the Sir Nicholas Shackleton Collection, Edinburgh University.

5 key clarinets (Bb with joints for clarinet in A) made by Carl Augustin Grenser (1720 -1807) in the Edinburgh University Collection.

Clarinet in Bb (with joints for clarinet in A) attributed to the clarinettist Bernhard Crusell in the Scenkonstmuseet Stockholm.

It was typical to have extra left and right hand joints (Corps-de-rechange or Mutationen) to change to clarinet in A .

The clarinets after Grenser shown above have 8 keys which enables the player to cover a wide range of repertoire. Clarinets with 5 to 12 keys are possible in this design. Double holes are possible on the 5 key Augustin Grenser design.
